We at AFR wish to congratulate long time Cincinnati Reds short stop Barry Larkin, who was the lone player voted in by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America for the Baseball Hall of Fame’s Class of 2012 this afternoon by receiving 86.4% of the vote. He is the 1st member of the Reds to be elected to the Hall since 2000 and played his entire 19-year career with his hometown team.
Larkin will be inducted on July 22 in Cooperstown along with the late Ron Santo, who breezed in with 15 votes from the 16-member Golden Era Committee that met at baseball’s winter meetings in December. Santo was a nine-time All-Star, hit 342 home runs, won five Gold Gloves and was a Cubs broadcaster for two decades. Also joining Larkin and Santo are FOX broadcaster and former catcher Tim McCarver, who in December won the Ford C. Frick Award for broadcasting excellence and Toronto Sun writer Bob Elliott, who has been named the 2012 J.G. Taylor Spink Award winner, presented annually by the BBWAA for meritorious contributions to baseball writing.
